Biography

I am an assemblage artist who uses miniatures to create diorama-like sculptures reminiscent of theatre sets. I am an assemblage artist who uses miniatures to create diorama-like sculptures reminiscent of theatre sets. These pint-sized tableaux, as one critic suggested, inhabit a “gooey humanness.” My art has been influenced by the Southern California assemblage movement of the 1960s, especially Ed Kienholz. I draw from many sources: art throughout history, religion, politics, music, film, fashion, photography, literature and pop culture. My curious amalgamations mash-up consumer kitsch with fine antiques in an attempt to foster a vibrant aesthetic. Referencing Medieval morality drama, my art opens the doors to a Theatre of Struggle; filled with both wonders and nightmares. In my densely layered worlds of ambiguity and mystery, viewers must grapple with open-ended narratives that ask difficult questions. A palpable spirit of longing permeates the work as I invite participants to ponder some of the things that matter most. I received my B.F.A. in printmaking and drawing from the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, and my M.F.A. in two-dimensional studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. I taught visual art at Biola University, La Mirada, CA, for 35 years. In 2019, my wife and I moved to Houston, TX.
